This essay proposes an interpretation of Spanish laicism from the early 19th century until the 2nd Republic. The essay takes into consideration the different aspects which shape and go together with it. Starting from the already existing French model, we are interested in studying how another lay model could be implemented in Spain. Showing crucial matters for this, such as the secularizing process, the role of the state and the spreading of laicism, we analyse the scope of this proposal which was at the same time social, cultural and political, as it stemmed from a republican political culture which was a long way from the dominant culture; thus making it very difficult to settle.
