The action of provincial elites before the construction of the first railways: Alava and Burgos (1850-1864)

The article analyzes the actions of elites of two northern inland spanish provinces, Alava and Burgos, before the construction of the first railways. Approaching the time of the society of notables, during the establishment of liberal state and order in the mid-nineteenth century, the text stops to consider the role of these provincial elites as intermediaries between the nationwide and local elites.
