The aim of this paper is to provide an account of the evolution of the historiography of the religious question during the Spanish Second Republic, from the end of Franco’s dictatorship up to the present. The article analyses both the changes in the thematic and methodological approaches and the diverging interpretations developed from catholic, liberal or marxist perspectives. Finally, it examines the renewing contributions arised from the dialogue with social sciences, as well as the bitter controversies related to the “war of memories” of the recent past that have divided historians since the beginning of this century.
