The Children and Young People Evacuated from the Provincial Welfare Institution of Toledo: From the Institutional Model to Family Foster Care, a Forced Transition (1936–1939)

The spanish civil war had profound repercussions on the population. This article examines the evacuation of the children and youths housed in the charitable institutions of the Provincial Council of Toledo and their reception in the Barcelona region of Noya, particularly in La Pobla de Claramunt and Igualada. Placed in private homes, a significant part of this group did not return to their province of origin until the end of the conflict. With the support of various organizations and strategies, the refugees were consistently protected by the Republic and by the Government of Catalonia. Within the administrative structure, the most direct assistance to refugees fell to the municipal councils. In this context, the solidarity shown by families in the rearguard households proved most effective in cases involving minors.
