Leonese Women in the Saturrarán Central Prison: Repression, Reeducation, and the Dynamics of Survival in the Francoist Postwar (1938–1944)

This article examines the experience of women from León imprisoned in Saturrarán Central Prison (1938–1944), a symbol of Francoist repression. Using judicial records and oral testimonies, it reconstructs their socio-economic profiles, political charges, living conditions, and survival strategies. The research highlights institutional violence, moral control, and forced labor, as well as the presence of children and re-education policies. It underscores the gendered dimension of repression and aims to preserve the memory of these women as part of Spain’s democratic history.
