Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the origins of the Cuban autonomist group of liberals during the transition of the Spanish Empire from Ancien Régime to liberalism. This group was made up of intellectuals and members of the Havanan sugar oligarchy. Their aim was to obtain a more advantageous position for the island within the framework of the Spanish liberal state which was being shaped in the first decades of the 19th century. As time went by this group of autonomists split up into a moderate and a progressive group.
