Traditionally, the interior peninsular is considered the main bulwark of absolutism during the reign of Fernando VII. However, the provincial capitals were not alien to liberalism, and both local political institutions and citizens mobilized intensively during the liberal triennium, highlighting the spread of liberalism in these small towns. In the case of Palencia, the population and their authorities were not only actively involved in the legitimization process of the new liberal regime. Palencia was not an isolated case, and other studies of Castilian towns have revealed similar evidence to support this.
