The Second Republic was a very important milestone in the evolution of the problem of fitting of the Basque provinces in Spain, because the 1931 Constitution allowed the achievement of statutes of autonomy for the regions they wished. The main Basque political forces agreed on obtaining the status of autonomy, although they had different opinions about the content and structure. This article explores the different views followed by the Republican parties before the Basque question: from the autonomy defended by Ramon Madariaga, author of the status of the Basque Studies Society, to the centralism of the Radical Republican Party.
