In the Portuguese historical and political culture, as well as in relations between Portugal and Spain, was never defined a unique position. Castile and Spain didn’t represent only the role of historic opponents, as usually has occurred in nationalist speeches. Iberist and hispanophile speeches, critical with Portuguese-British alliance, integrated Portuguese and Castilian people in a peninsular Hispanic us. However, the dominant historical memory dramatized a negative portrayal of the Spanish danger, in general, and of the dynastic union (1580-1640), in particular.
