In the seventies, Euro-communism appeared as an interesting political novelty, although its definition was not easy. Some considered it as a new hope for the left, other like "a usual trap of communism" or "a fit genuine Marxism for contemporary society in Europe". Many years later, it still looks like valid to ask what it was truly. Although it is difficult to offer a univocally accepted answer, this article aims to provide a satisfactory and comprehensive definition of euro-communism, considered necessary to think on what it really was, rather than in terms of what might have been.
