The main goal of Louis XVIII for domestic policy, was to put religion at the head of all institutions (mainly the Army), through the multiplication of religious ceremonies, compensation acts toward the victims of the Revolution, and Missions. His aim was to give a divine justification to a restoration that relied on foreign forces. He partly succeeded (through many difficulties due to his will to support the Galican Church), but he provoked a split inside French society, between a right that referred to catholicism, and an anticlerical left. That split was to endure at least until the end of the Second World War.
